Project

In the heart of Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most iconic and evocative districts, stands Muni Alain Ducasse, an elegant fine dining restaurant opened in 2020 within the prestigious MUNI KYOTO hotel. Overlooking the renowned Togetsukyo Bridge and immersed in a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty, the project was conceived to create an experience where architecture, gastronomy, and nature coexist in perfect harmony. Large floor-to-ceiling windows open onto the river, gardens, and surrounding vegetation, allowing guests to experience the continuous transformation of the seasons—an element deeply rooted in Japanese culture and a key source of inspiration for the entire design concept.
The interiors, designed by Uchida Design Studio, interpret the essence of the location through a contemporary sensibility, favouring natural materials, compositional balance, and meticulous attention to detail. This approach earned the project the prestigious iF DESIGN AWARD 2021 in the Interior Architecture category, recognizing its design excellence and its ability to create an environment that conveys calm, elegance, and authenticity.
To complete this vision, Uchida Design Studio selected Vistosi as its partner for the decorative lighting design, entrusting the Murano glassmakers with the development of a bespoke collection created specifically for the restaurant’s interiors. The installation reflects the architectural language of the project with remarkable coherence, transforming glass into an element capable of engaging in a subtle dialogue with both the surrounding landscape and the intimate atmosphere of the interiors.

The composition is distinguished by its essential and rigorous form, inspired by the bamboo stalks that are a symbolic presence within the Arashiyama landscape. Cylindrical elements crafted from pure crystal alternate smooth, transparent sections with portions featuring a delicate sandblasted ribbed finish, creating a refined contrast between transparency and texture. The varying lengths and diameters of the lighting elements, combined with their carefully studied arrangement at different heights, both as individual pendants and clustered compositions, lend the installation a sense of lightness and visual rhythm.
Light passes through the crystal, enhancing its textures and creating a discreet yet striking presence that complements the dining experience without overpowering it. The result is a project that perfectly expresses the meeting point between Murano glassmaking tradition and contemporary Japanese aesthetics: a bespoke intervention where formal simplicity, artisanal precision, and material research merge in a balance of remarkable elegance.
Completed in Kyoto in 2020, this project demonstrates Vistosi’s ability to develop custom solutions that integrate harmoniously within outstanding architectural settings, transforming light into a medium that connects space, materiality, and emotion.
