Set within the evocative landscape of Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most captivating and iconic districts, MUNI LA BOUTIQUE forms part of the exclusive MUNI KYOTO project, overlooking the renowned Togetsukyo Bridge. Here, nature, architecture, and Japanese culture coexist in perfect harmony, creating an experience that engages the senses through a continuous dialogue with the surrounding landscape. The sound of the river, the light filtering across the bridge, the fragrances carried by the wind, and the changing seasons all become integral elements of the place’s identity, profoundly influencing the design and material choices throughout the space.

Like the other environments within MUNI KYOTO, designed by Uchida Design Studio, MUNI LA BOUTIQUE is distinguished by its refined attention to materiality and the quality of its details. Expansive glazed surfaces dissolve the boundary between indoors and outdoors, allowing nature to visually enter the space and helping to create an atmosphere that is calm, authentic, and deeply connected to its surroundings. Natural materials, delicate tones, and an essential design approach define an architectural language that celebrates simplicity as a form of elegance.

The excellence of the project was internationally recognized with the receipt of the iF DESIGN AWARD 2021 in the Interior Architecture category, one of the most prestigious distinctions in the field of contemporary design. Presented by iF International Forum Design, the award is the result of an evaluation process conducted by a jury of experts from around the world, who each year select the most innovative and significant projects in architecture and design.

To interpret the distinctive atmosphere of the project through light and glass, architect Shigeru Uchida selected Vistosi as a partner for the creation of a bespoke collection developed specifically for the boutique’s interiors. The installation draws inspiration from the bamboo canes that characterize the landscape of Arashiyama, reinterpreting their verticality and lightness through the language of glass.

The composition is distinguished by an essential and rigorous form that combines smooth, transparent cylindrical sections of crystal with elements featuring a delicate sandblasted ribbed finish. The varying lengths and diameters of the pure crystal canes, suspended at different heights and arranged both individually and in clustered compositions, create a refined and harmonious visual rhythm. Light passes through the transparent and textured surfaces, enhancing their qualities and creating a presence that is both discreet and highly scenographic.

Completed in Kyoto in 2020, this project represents a perfect encounter between Murano glassmaking tradition and Japanese aesthetic sensibility. A bespoke intervention in which glass becomes an expression of balance, lightness, and design research, contributing to the creation of a sophisticated environment deeply connected to the landscape that surrounds it.
